Silo Bolts
Fused Bolts
What Is A Silo Bolt
A Silo Bolt, or more commonly known as a Nibbed Bolt is used in the manufacture and bolting together of glass
fused to steel silos and slurry stores.
The nibs (or fins) are located under the head of the bolts which when assembled locate in the pre-stamped
hole in the tank sheets then bite into the material when tightened.
These bolts can be used in “Glass fused to steel” bolted tanks for waste liquids, water, digesters and leachate
amongst others. The bolts are usually tightened up with an impact wrench and the bolts are supplied with
matching nuts and washers to suit.
The thread form most commonly used is ½ UNC although M12 is used on occasion.

Bolt Grading And Finishes
Bolts come in a variety of grades of which short bolts are mostly 8.8 and longer bolts grade 10.9 all in
accordance with ISO standards. Lengths start at 1” up to and including 3”
The most common finish is Hot Dip Galvanise (HDG) and nuts are supplied oversize to ensure they match the
bolts along with washers.
A plastic cap is moulded onto the bolt head and a colour determines the length of the bolt to avoid the
incorrect bolt being placed in the sheet or where needed items such as ladders etc will be located on the
outside of the tank.
